Family farming suffers first hand from climate change and is, in turn, one of the main keys to mitigation efforts.

Madrid, December 3, 2019. More than 25,000 representatives from 200 countries (heads of States and Governments, environmental organizations, private sector, scientists, etc.) will meet in Madrid at the UN Climate Change Conference COP25 that will take place in the IFEMA space, from 2 to 13 December, to reach agreements and commitments between nations to combat the effects of climate change. As could not be otherwise, the Decade for Family Farming will be very present at COP25, especially on 5 December. On that day there will be two simultaneous events, in whose organization the WRF is taking part, and to whom we would be inviting you:

On the one hand, the event “Family Farming, Biodiversity and Climate Change. The opportunities of the United Nations Decade for Family Farming” will take place on December 5 from 16:00 to 17:00 in the Spain Pavilion of the Blue Zone. This event is addressed exclusively to official Delegations. It is organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of Spain, the Embassy of Costa Rica in Spain, the Union of Small Farmers (UPA) and the World Rural Forum (WRF).

It is clear nowadays that the current model of energy production and consumption is generating a global climatic shift, which in turn will cause serious impacts both on the earth and on socioeconomic systems. In this context, the parallel event organized will try to show that the international community's great commitment to family farming, called the United Nations Decade for Family Farming, is also a commitment to the transition towards more sustainable food systems that can provide economic opportunities for farmers and, at the same time, protect and enhance ecosystems, respect the cultural and social diversity of territories and build resilience to climate change.

On the other hand, we will hold the event “Launch of the United Nations Decade for Family Farming (2019-2028) in Spain and its involvement in Climate Change”. It will be on the same day, December 5 from 16:15 to 17:00 at the Forum for Sectoral Action and Innovation in the Green Zone. This event will be open to the public with accreditation, which can be obtained at this link

This second parallel event, open to the whole society, will showcase the historic opportunity that the Decade for Family Farming represents for Spain, pointing out some important challenges to be addressed, such as climate change and depopulation of the land. In the same way, the first steps to be taken in the near future between different agents will be pointed out, managing to advance in the search of sustainable and balanced solutions with the territory.

This event is organized by UPA (Spanish Union of Small Farmers) and the World Rural Forum (WRF).
