The World Rural Forum (WRF) renews its website dedicated to the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028.

  • Familyfarmingcampaign.org has been highlighting the work of family farmers' organizations around the world in promoting specific policies for more than a decade.

Tuesday, 12 May 2020 - The World Rural Forum (WRF) has renewed of the website dedicated to the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028 (UNDFF). This website aims to provide a space where family farmers are protagonists of the UNDFF, since the real changes in these 10 years must take place at the global and regional level, but especially at the national and subnational level, which is where more impact will be made to improve the quality of life of family farmers.

In the current situation of crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic, strengthening family farming is more than ever a key element, with the National Action Plans of the Decade being a concrete instrument for defining policies to strengthen family farming.

The website familyfarmingcampaign.org has served as a platform to make family farming visible around the world for more than a decade; since the beginning of the civil society-led campaign that brought the declaration of the International Year of Family Farming 2014 (IYFF 2014). It was the main platform on which much of the work and achievements of IYFF 2014 were disseminated. It became then the website of the IYFF+10 initiative to carry on with the work started during the IYFF 2014, to continue with the campaign for the declaration of the Decade of Family Farming.

This website has reflected different stages of the work of the WRF, but especially of farmers organizations and the National Committees of Family Farming (NCFF).

Now, with the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028 (DNUAF) ahead, the website has a new image and structure, better adapted to this new opportunity.

In addition to including the most important documents and processes of the Decade, it has been chosen to give greater visibility to three key goals defined in the UNDFF Global Action Plan. These are the development by 2024 of 100 National Action Plans developed by Governments in dialogue with family farmers' organizations and/or National Committees of Family Farming, 7 Sub-Regional Action Plans and 5 Regional Action Plans developed in dialogue with family farmers' organizations.

The recognition and strengthening of National Committees of Family Farming (mainly led by farmers' organizations) and other dialogue platforms for the elaboration, monitoring and implementation of National Action Plans for the UNDFF is undoubtedly one of the great keys to the success of the Decade.

For this reason, this website is a space to make visible, not only the existence and work of the NCFF, but also other platforms for policy dialogue relevant to the implementation of the UNDFF.

It should be noted that the website offers a space for women, as this is a priority for the WRF and its member family farming organizations. The third pillar of the Global Action Plan of the UNDFF, which cuts across the entire Plan, identifies "Promoting gender equity in family farming and the leadership role of rural women" as a priority. The Action Plan sets ambitious goals for defining comprehensive public policies, programmes and standards to address the challenges of rural women, family farmers and indigenous women and to guarantee their rights.

It is therefore expected to contribute to the achievement of the goals included in Pillar 3 of the UNDFF Global Action Plan on behalf of women in family farming around the world.

PROGRESS IN MONITORING THE DECADE

Along with national implementation, the monitoring and reporting system of the UN Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF) is one of the fundamental keys to ensuring its success.

There is a need to follow up on the ambitious goals of the Decade included in the Global Action Plan of the UNDFF, but it is also necessary to monitor the development of the different public policies and investments and their impact on rural populations.

Familyfarmingcampaign.org has a space where the monitoring reports of the Decade will be collected.

The renewed website familyfarmingcampaign.org is now available. We therefore invite you to visit and share the site and its contents. We hope you enjoy it.
